Our Work

The LHCPR is an annual community building and revolutionary sharing of the works of Langston Hughes that has brought interconnectivity and robust representation to the cultural offerings of Providence since 1995. It is a curated multimedia event involving 40-75 BIPOC artists and community members invited to read and/or perform the works of Langston Hughes.

Quote from Langston Hughes

Perhaps the mission of an artist is to interpret beauty to people – the beauty within themselves.

Rev. Linda Watkins - "Mother to Son"

S. Brian Jones - "Black Clown"

Our Impact

Readers are encouraged to present the work in multilingual and multinational perspectives resulting in an ongoing and developing depth of personal connection and understanding of Langston Hughes works. Participating readers also contribute to the perpetual prescience and contemporary importance of the works by adding contemporaneous analysis and interpretation. Audience members contribute to the
experience by returning annually for community building, inspiration, and to be empowered by Hughes' words, the artist interpretations, and a multi-generational community.
